BS 8418 Compliant CCTV Monitoring Systems

Having a well-designed BS 8418 compliant system will enable the constant and efficient monitoring of your premises and assure you of a Level One response from the Police or other responding authority.

The system could potentially reduce your insurance liability as well as reducing the risk of arson, theft and vandalism.

What is BS 8418?

BS 8418 is a Code of Practice for the installation and remote monitoring of detector activated CCTV systems. It sets out recommendations on best practice for the design, installation, commissioning and operation of detector activated CCTV systems. Only systems that are installed to BS 8418 can qualify for a Unique Reference Number (URN) which is issued by the local police authority to guarantee police response.

What are the benefits of installing to BS 8418?

A BS 8418 system will:

  1. Enable the constant and efficient monitoring of the site.
  2. Give level one response from the police or other responding authority.
  3. Reduce the risk of arson, theft and vandalism.

Some of the key benefits of a BS 8418 system include:

  1. Protecting staff during the day and goods and property at night.
  2. Providing an electronic replacement for, or an enhancement to existing security arrangements.
Why choose GB Monitoring as your BS 8418 system monitoring station?

GB Monitoring operates a Remote Video Receiving Centre (RVRC) which complies with BS 5979 Category 2 and is accredited to NACOSS ARC Gold by the NSI, to monitor BS 8418 systems.

GB Monitoring has considerable experience in BS 8418 systems responsible for monitoring some of the first systems ever installed in the country.

Operation benefits from BS 8418 compliant systems:

Detectors:

  1. Detection devices will be fit for purpose and suitable for the environment in which they are used.
  2. Detection will not overspill the boundary of your protected area.
  3. All detection on your premises will fall within your cameras fields of view.

Camera Equipment:

  1. Camera equipment will operate effectively in the lighting conditions on the premises (see “lighting” below) to produce a useable image.
  2. The entry / exit route will be viewed by a fixed camera or pan / tilt / zoom (PTZ) in its parked position.

Audio Challenge

  1. An audio challenge system will be installed, which is a mandatory requirement of BS 8418 compliant systems, in order to obtain a Unique Reference Number (URN) and gain level one Police response.
  2. In most cases, an audio challenge encourages unwanted visitors to leave your premises.
  3. Care will be taken to ensure that the audio challenge system does not cause a noise nuisance to your local community.

Lighting:

  1. Good lighting is essential to the satisfactory operation and monitoring of a BS 8418 system.
  2. During the survey of the premises, the system designer must determine the suitability of existing lighting. If this is sufficient to provide satisfactory operation and monitoring of your BS 8418 system, no additional lighting will be required.
