Case Study - Grantham Old Police Station
In 2007, Lincolnshire Police moved out of the Police Station on St Catherines Road, to a new state of the art premises on the outskirts of Grantham. Since then the original site has been boarded up and left empty.
Due to vandalism Lincolnshire Police employed a manned guarding company to provide security for the site 24 hours a day throughout the year. Whilst the manned guarding element proved very effective, this type of security measure also proved to be very expensive leading Lincolnshire Police to look into other security options, including a detector activated remotely monitored CCTV system.
GB Monitoring operate a remotely monitored CCTV system which includes 20 cameras and 31 detection devices to protect the premises 24 hours a day. The system is also BS 8418 compliant.
The site is spread across a large area close to the centre of Grantham and surrounded by trees. The site comprises of the main Police station, a garage, an old stable block which was used as offices and then 10 police houses which span either side of the main building.
Providing protection to the site was challenging to ensure reliability of detection due to the overgrowth that surrounds most of the buildings. An advanced video analytical detection system from Adpro which would cope with moving trees but still be able to detect intruders in very poor areas was used to overcome this issue. Other passive infrared detectors have also been installed around the buildings which are in open areas, providing more detection for the site. All of the cameras have been installed in conjunction with infrared lights which ensure the cameras continue to operate even under very poor lighting conditions.
The system is linked back to the control room via a dedicated broadband which provides a fast and secure means of protecting the site. The system also includes a full backup communications signalling path so should the primary means fail, images from the cameras can still be viewed and the system operated. Transmission of the images is via two Heitel transmitters linked to the Adpro Presidium unit for remote transmission, the system also includes an onsite PA system which would be used should intruders be detected.
