Case Study - Lincolnshire Homeless Hostel
The hostel was opened late last year as a shelter for homeless people to assist them back into independent living. The building is located on the outskirts of a Lincolnshire town and is run and operated by a local Housing Association.
During the daytime members of staff provide residents with help and support but outside normal hours the site is left without any members of staff. The Housing Association wanted to provide security and protection outside of normal hours and asked GB Monitoring to provide advice on how this could be achieved.
Upon reviewing the site, we decided that the best solution would be a detector activated remotely monitored CCTV system which provides coverage outside of the premises but within the secure gardens. If movement is then detected the system will transmit the live and alarmed images to our control room in Donington. Once these images have been received, the operator will be able to use the tannoy system to warn off intruders before contacting the Police.
Internal vandal resistant cameras in each of the corridors and a further camera in the office have also been implemented. The cameras in the corridors are used for viewing purposes and the camera in the office is used in conjunction with a PA button which can be used by daytime staff if they feel vulnerable. Upon pressing the PA button the alarmed images are transmitted to the control room where the operator will be able to observe what is happening and provide support to the member of staff on site by using the PA system or contacting the relevant persons.
The system includes 10 CCTV cameras of which four are monitored. The other six CCTV cameras are used for security and local monitoring.
Staff at the Housing association are pleased with the security and protection provided by the system. “The hostel provides a vital service for vulnerable adults, giving them a safe and supportive environment in which to live. The reassurance provided by the CCTV system is an important part of this.”
